Tuscaloosa Delegation Visits Ghana - 2023
Our Tuscaloosa delegation has had an unforgettable journey through Ghana, experiencing its rich culture, history, and warm hospitality. The trip began with a full day of touring Accra, where we explored the National Theatre, national monuments, and the historic Jamestown community, soaking in the vibrant city life and history. We enjoyed delicious Ghanaian cuisine, shopped for local treasures, and in the afternoon, visited the W.E.B. DuBois Museum—an inspiring experience highlighting the life and legacy of this African-American scholar. The following days were marked by solemn reflections as we drove along the Cape Coast, visiting Elmina Castle, a Portuguese fortress built in the 1400s, later used by the Dutch for holding enslaved Africans. The weight of history was felt deeply as we learned about the brutal confinement endured by so many, culminating in the "door of no return" to awaiting slave ships. The next day took us to Assin Manso, where many enslaved individuals received their last bath before their final journey, a place of reverence and reflection for millions of descendants who return to honor their ancestors.
In Sunyani, we were honored to meet with the Bono Regional Minister, the Mayors of Sunyani and Techiman, local officials, and the Queen Mother (Nana) and Paramount Chiefs, forging deeper ties for future collaboration. We also visited a Montessori school, met enthusiastic students and teachers, and explored the lively Sunyani market, filled with fascinating sights and sounds. The evening brought pure joy as we witnessed traditional Ghanaian music and dance performances, an experience made even more powerful by the rain that moved the celebration indoors. Our gratitude for this cultural exchange was boundless. The next morning, we visited a local textile weaving site, where the vibrant colors and intricate designs captivated us. Our whirlwind adventure continued in Techiman, where we enjoyed a cultural program with the Bono East region tribal chief, visited the Boabeng-Fiema monkey sanctuary, and marveled at the stunning Kintampo Falls and the daring rope bridge. We also visited the Kristo Buase monastery and enjoyed the natural beauty of the region.
A visit to Mole’ National Park brought us face-to-face with elephants on a thrilling safari, before heading back to Accra for some last-minute shopping at a beautiful bead store and a relaxing lunch by the water at the Labadi Beach Hotel. Our trip concluded with a visit to the Accra Arts Center, where we picked up souvenirs to remember this incredible journey. We are deeply grateful for the kindness, hospitality, and partnership shared with us throughout this transformative experience. Medase, Ghana!
