SUNYANI-TECHIMAN, GHANA

Hello from Sunyani-Techiman, Ghana!

Sunyani is a vibrant city in the West African republic of Ghana, serving as the capital of both the Sunyani District and the Brong-Ahafo Region. With an estimated population of 80,245, it is a key urban center in the region. Nestled within the forested Southern Ashanti Uplands, Sunyani originated as an outpost for elephant hunters during the 19th century. The city’s name is derived from the Akan word for elephant, "Osono." Sunyani plays a vital role in the distribution of cocoa, kola nuts, and essential staple foods such as maize and yams. As the administrative heart of the region, Sunyani is home to the regional government and high court, as well as several post-secondary institutions, including two polytechnic schools, the College of Renewable National Resources, and Catholic University. The city also boasts some of the best primary, secondary, and technical schools in the country. In 2007, Sunyani was recognized as the cleanest city in Ghana by the Ghana Tourist Board.

Techiman, another major city in the Brong-Ahafo Region, is a leading market town and has seen rapid growth in recent decades, with its population growing ninefold since Ghana’s independence in 1960. Located at the crossroads of historical trade routes and the Tano River, Techiman serves as the capital of the Techiman Municipal District. The city is currently constructing a modern cultural center to preserve the traditions of the Bono nation. Techiman is also known for its vibrant annual Apoo festival, held in April/May, which is celebrated in a style reminiscent of Mardi Gras.
